You can get the cheapest Micro 4/3 camera with 4k for less than $250. Here's why I think it's worth it.

I've been using this camera for pictures and video for 7 months now. It's not a great camera, in fact it's the lowest priced interchangeable lens new #mirrorless digital camera on the market. And that is the best you can say about it. But I still like it for some reasons, and dislike it for others. Stay around for the end of the video to see how I work around the things I dislike, and that's why I can say it's worth the money.

On our channel we've focused on How To videos, I had been using multiple smart phones, and a cheap Vivitar action camera to shoot our video, but I wanted to get a better quality of video. So when Sherry said we should get a better camera, I was all over it. However we had a budget that was almost $0 for this purchase. So I started looking at digital cameras, and most of them were so far out of our budget it wasn't even funny, then I found this one. While the reviews were not giving it much love, most said it can change lenses, it has 4k video, over 20 mp photos, and when on sale was less than $280. We bought it.

Now, I have spent more for less, in cameras before. I am not saying it's the best, but here is what I found that I really do like about it:

The Micro 4/3 (aka...MFT, Micro F/T, etc...) concept is brilliant. Any camera with this size sensor can interchange lenses, so I can get lenses from Olympus or Panasonic, and use them just like native Yi lenses. The mirrorless design allows for adapters to use other lenses from almost anything.

When we started this channel, our videos were in 720p HD. When I upgraded our computer we upgraded our released videos as 1080p Full HD. In both cases the cameras we were using didn't have any optical zoom. So enlarging the video in post was my only option, this lead to some out of focus videos. When I shoot in 4k, or even 2k, I can now get in close with the lens or in post and not have the same focus issues.

Now there are things that I don't like about this camera, but for most of these I have found a work around that I will discuss at the end of the video.

Work Around for Limitations

Auto focus
This was easy just don't use it for critical footage. This is where taking the kit lens out of the system works best. I have spent less than $70 and I have 2 old manual lenses that allow the camera to work in manual focus and aperture. This lets me choose what I want to focus on and what depth of field I want.
