A day with the lovely people of the Rabha tribe. Rabha, also, Rava, etc., are an indigenous Tibeto-Burman community of the Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal. They speak Rabha, a Tibeto-Burman language, as well as Assamese. In Assam, the Rabhas live mostly in Goalpara, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Udalguri, and Baksa districts; and also in some places of Bongaigaon, Chirang, Sonitpur, and Karbi Anglong districts. In Meghalaya, Rabhas are mostly found in Garo Hills districts.
The place where we went to was in Goalpara District and the village name is Kachomari, Nabang. Surrounded by the alpine Garo hills the village is blissfull. The people there are so calm and companionable. We received a warm welcome from them. The women were dressed in their traditional attire. Their head gear is called Khodobang, the long cloth is called Ek bandhia Rufan, the cloth on their shoulder is called Phajar and the belt type cloth is called Komor Phakai.
On the first day the delicacies we had tasted were Silkworm fry, Pork with Black split grams, Dry fish with Rosella flowers. The story behind the tradition of eating Silkworm is that in early ages everyone was a hunter and it was not possible for them to get a big catch every day. So whatever eatable was easily available was consumed by them which also included the silkworms. Now a days it has become a delicacy rather than a necessity, but silkworms contains high amount of protein content. A simple fried dish was made which tasted juicy and awesome. The pork and rosella flower dish was a healthy and simple dish which was cooked without oil. The lunch was wholesome and fascinating. For refreshment they served their traditionally brewed beverage named “Jonga”. They brew it from rice and sweet in taste. The village has an age old tradition that they don’t brew for commercial purposes. They brew it only for the guest and traditional festivities.
