How can climate and carbon finance support the clean energy transition and adaptation in Pakistan, for a just transition and sustainability?

The devastating floods of 2022 showed the world that Pakistan is on the frontline of climate change. As the country struggles to grapple with the aftereffects of the floods that were compounded by climate change, the government of Pakistan and the UN Secretary-General, hosted a conference in January 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland, mobilizing commitments for $US7 billion.

The need for climate finance, not just in Pakistan, is however not close to being met. Completing the clean energy transition, while building climate resilience for the future requires access to finance, geared towards the those who are most severely affected by the negative effects of climate change.

Carbon market mechanisms with high integrity has the potential to both ensure the most cost-effective emissions reductions, while also leveraging finance for resilience.

In its NDC, Pakistan encourages the involvement of the private sector in implementing its climate ambition through the instruments of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, but what are the barriers, and how can an inclusive and just transition benefitting broader sustainable development be ensured?
