Описание к видео FTC Fiber Line

Let's listen as FTC's own Mark McCray talks to students from Kingstree Senior High School about fiber, how it functions and its power.

This is a fiber. This is a 72 fiber. This little guy here has 72 fibers on it. These are called buffer tubes. You notice the colors, each buffer two is a color. One will be the blue and then inside the blue has fibers and they're all colored. That indicates which fiber in that buffer tube is which number in that one to 72. Because at the end of the day, you want light to travel across this. That's how, whereas it used to be electrical signal. Now it's light. And you don't want anything to cause problems with that light. What they call "loss", like if there was a bubble or if it was a bad splice to where it wasn't lined up, it would have reflection to it. And it would decrease the efficiency of it.

But if you want to take a look at it, I took a pair of fiber strippers and stripped that one. You see this brown one right here. You see that, that glass tube in that middle of that brown one right there.

I do. That's the fiber. Be careful because it'll stick in your finger. You see that? And that's how big it is. It's as big as a strand of hair. But what I wanted to say is that one strand of hair can carry ... I can't tell you how many more of these that can carry. This could carry 75 phone calls. This can carry thousands of phone calls in that one strand of hair.

In a fiber environment, data transformed into light is transmitted through or travels down strands of glass, the size of a single human hair. With this technology, there's little interference to hinder the travel of data. So it essentially has no limitations. This increases the power of the network exponentially and provides the pathway for amazing symmetrical speeds. When the download and upload speeds are identical, it also makes one gigabit available.

Since it's glass, does it ever break on you?

Fiber is funny. It is glass. It is glass cable. It's amazing the stuff you can do to the fiber. But it's as durable as you can get it. It's much tougher than copper. When it gets hot, it doesn't stretch. The sheath doesn't mess up like the copper does. It's good stuff. You could put it out here and transfer trucks can run over it. You can take sledgehammers and hit it. It's tough. We're plowing it with a vibratory plow that violently shakes the ground. You can feel it for 30 feet around. It doesn't hurt the glass.

And that will do it. Thanks to Mark McCray, Jim Gregory, and the students from Kingstree Senior High School. And as always, thank you for watching.
