Sepupz, the upside down flag saga has become one of the most heated flashpoints of Malaysia’s 2025 National Day season. What began with a Penang hardware store owner mistakenly displaying the Jalur Gemilang incorrectly was turned into a national spectacle, with Akmal Saleh leading a crowd in what many saw as an act of political bullying. The incident has sparked deep questions about patriotism, fear, and the meaning of loyalty to country.

In this discussion, I sit down with Professor Tajuddin Rasdi of UCSI University in a conversation titled “When the Jalur Gemilang Got Weaponized.” Together, we explore the layers beneath the controversy: the bullying culture that was on display, the symbolic usage of the national flag as a political weapon, and the troubling ease with which ordinary Malaysians can become targets in moments of orchestrated outrage.

More importantly, we reflect on what this means for our society moving forward. How should we respond when symbols of unity are turned into tools of division? What responsibilities do leaders, educators, and citizens share in reclaiming the Jalur Gemilang as a genuine emblem of harmony rather than hostility?
