Every carbureted car is different. Every single one has their own technique for best starting, that the owner learns over the course of driving the car. My old Chevy took only 1 or 2 pumps, then turn the key and it would fire up fine. An ex-coworker of mine would slam the pedal 3 or 4 times, start cranking, then floor it and hold it until it starts. So there's really no rhyme or reason, it's just what works best for the fastest starting on the particular car. Of course carburetors go out of tune pretty easily, which is why there are so many techniques.
