It is entirely appropriate to lament our circumstances when we are in the midst of suffering of various kinds. This world is broken and even creation itself groans as it longs for the day when God will set things right (Romans 8:20–23). Suffering becomes even more anguishing when we feel that specific challenges we must endure might be also keeping us from the work that God has commissioned us to do. But while lament may be appropriate, lament by itself is incomplete. Paul’s reaction to his own circumstances of suffering in Philippians 1:12–18 teaches us that we should not only lament, but also rejoice as we face any kind of trial because our difficulties may very well be a door to what God has for us.
