STORYLINE:
As the US presidential election draws nearer, the highly publicised campaign is also proving to be big business for the merchandisers of New York on Monday.
Market sellers in Union Square park had stalls filled to the brim with buttons and t-shirts featuring the candidates.
Many said that products featuring Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama were their biggest sellers, not surprising considering polls suggest Manhattan is mostly filled with democratic voters.
Irene Feldsher, who sells Obama t-shirts, said she tried at one point to sell buttons featuring Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain but said that New Yorkers didn't want it, "They feel that Obama is the right man."
Uptown at Rainbows and Triangles novelty store, the Obama boxer briefs have become the stores top seller.
The Chicago senator's face is on the front of the briefs, and an '08' number on the back.
Other highlights at the store include toilet paper with McCain's image, fake Obama money, and a book entitled, "Goodnight Bush" created as a parody of the popular childrens' book entitled "Goodnight Moon."
But Obama is not the only politician creating a surge in sales.
Many women in some areas of New York are reportedly trying to copy the fashions and styles of Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin.
In Brooklyn, a wig wholesaler said on Monday its lookalike Palin wig has become one of the company's most popular items.
