**National Citizen Party (Bangladesh)
*National Citizen Party (NCP) is a political party in Bangladesh that was established on **February 28, 2025**. The party emerged from the student-led anti-discrimination movements and the National Citizen Committee, making it the first student-led political party in Bangladesh’s history.
History and Background
Following the downfall of the Awami League government after the *July Revolution* on August 5, 2024, rumors about the formation of a new political party began to circulate. During this revolution, the anti-discrimination students' leadership called for a new political system. Subsequently, the *National Citizen Committee* was formed in September 2024 to rebuild the country. In December 2024, plans were made for the formation of a new party, and efforts were made to establish committees in every police precinct across Bangladesh. The final decision to form the party was reached in February 2025, and it was officially announced between **February 23-25, 2025**. On **February 28, 2025**, the party was formally established under the leadership of interim convenor **Nahid Islam**.
Ideology
The ideological foundation of the National Citizen Party is built on **pluralism**, **reformism**, **sovereignism**, **nationalism**, **progressivism**, and **anti-authoritarianism**. The party does not adhere strictly to left-wing or right-wing ideologies but instead adopts a centrist approach with core values of **equality**, **justice**, and **good governance**. The party aims to avoid ideological divisions and strives for broad inclusion and unity. It focuses on creating a fair and equitable political system that prevents the return of authoritarian rule.
Formation and Leadership
The National Citizen Party was established with an interim leadership committee headed by *Nahid Islam* as the convenor and *Akhtar Hossain* as the general secretary. Other important figures in the formation included **Samantha Sharmin**, **Ariful Islam Adib**, and **Nasiruddin Patowari**. The leadership of the party includes a diverse group of individuals, including former military personnel, civil servants, and businessmen, as well as former political activists from various factions.
The party's leadership structure consists of *151 members* with regional leaders responsible for different parts of the country, such as *Hasnat Abdullah* for the southern region and *Sorghis Alam* for the northern region.
Controversies and Challenges
The formation of the National Citizen Party has raised concerns among other political factions, who have accused the interim government of supporting the formation of the party. There have also been disputes within the party over positions, particularly concerning the general secretary role. Additionally, there were reports of discussions regarding the inclusion of former members of the *Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir* in the new party, which has led to debates about the transparency of the party’s formation.
Student Wing
Initially, there were plans to create a separate student organization for the new party. However, student leaders have since declared their intention to remain independent from any political party. The new student organization aims to fill the void left by the absence of **Chhatra League**, the student wing of the ruling party, in Bangladesh’s student politics.
