F1 GP Monza 1995 - Race Highlights

The 1995 Italian Grand Prix (officially Pioneer 66º Gran Premio d’Italia) took place on 10 September at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in Monza and was the twelfth race of the 1995 Formula One World Championship.

Pole-sitter Coulthard spun on the formation lap at the exit of the Ascari chicane and subsequently retired in the pit lane as his car was no longer drivable when the rest of the field headed to the grid. However, the race was red-flagged after a collision on the first lap at the same spot (on Coulthard's dust, which he brought with him when attempting to rejoin the track). Massimiliano Papis, Jean-Christophe Boullion, Roberto Moreno and Andrea Montermini were involved in the accident, blocking the track so that no one could get through.

Coulthard was then able to start the restart from pole again (in the spare car that was actually set up for Hill), while Moreno and Montermini were unable to take part in the restart due to a lack of spare cars.

At the second Start Coulthard led until lap 13 when a wheel bearing failed and he had to retire. Berger took the lead. Behind him, Hill and Schumacher had their second major collision of the season after the British Grand Prix. As Hill attempted to lap Taki Inoue, he crashed into the back of Schumacher while braking for the second chicane, causing both to retire. Schumacher ran to confront Hill's car while the British driver sat in his cockpit, but Schumacher was immediately pulled away by the marshals. He later apologised to Hill when Inoue admitted that the incident was his fault as he had slid in front of Hill while overtaking Schumacher, causing Hill to swerve and accidentally drive into the back of Schumacher's car. Hill was then banned from one race for his involvement in the collision.

After the pit stops, the Ferraris were in first and second place, but at the home race there was drama: First a TV camera fell off the car of the Frenchman Alesi and smashed the suspension of his teammate. Alesi was still in the lead for seven laps - until a wheel that was not properly tightened made the tragedy complete.[3] As in the previous year, Alesi also retired while in the lead. This series of retirements gave Herbert his second victory and Mika Häkkinen and Heinz-Harald Frentzen the best results of their careers to date. It was also the first podium finish for the Sauber team in Formula 1. Papis was on his way to his first points result until he was overtaken by Boullion on the last lap.[4]

In the drivers' championship, Schumacher remained ahead of Hill. Herbert was now third, overtaking Alesi. In the constructors' championship, the first three positions remained unchanged.
