I love Zhaoxing, the largest of the thousands of Dong villages in China. This scene here took place in one of Zhaoxing's amazing drum towers. The young boys and girls sing together in the presence of chaperones, with the boys usually playing instruments and the girls sewing while they sing. T

The mountains around Zhaoxing contain many ancient Dong villages, some going back nearly a thousand years to the Song Dynasty. Some of them can be reached by road, others by ancient pathways, like the Old Stone Road, which climb up through thousands of feet of beautifully architected and landscaped rice terraces.

This is the best footage I have of the young people spontaneously doing their choral singing: this is not a performance, just young Dong people gathered together socially and hanging out beneath the timeless carpentry of the nail-less drum towers that serve as communal gathering points.
