Let’s talk about treaties 📜

Treaties are powerful contracts outlining specific obligations between two or more political authorities. Treaties to which the United States is a party also have the force of federal legislation, forming part of what the Constitution calls ''the supreme Law of the Land.''

The United States has a long and bloody history of breaking treaties with Tribal Nations to further their colonial interests. In the case of the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, not only were the Black Hills illegally stolen from the Sioux Nation, but their sacred mountain, “The Six Grandfathers”, was desecrated and turned into a tourist attraction.

And when federal agencies close or funding stalls, essential services like healthcare, education, and food assistance are disrupted in Native communities. These aren’t optional programs—they are commitments made through treaties, the highest law of the land.

Treaties are binding contracts that must be upheld by all parties. The fact that the U.S. government so flagrantly breaks their treaties is an indictment of the U.S., NOT on the legal power of treaties themselves.
