OVER HALF OF WORKING LONDON GOES HUNGRY! Did you know that in 2024, 56% of working Londoners used a food bank? With increasing living costs, the energy crisis, Brexit, Covid, and skyrocketing rents, adults and children alike have been forced to rely on food banks. At the same time, the UK throws away enough food every year to fill Wembley Stadium TEN times! There surely has to be a better way to stop food waste, and all of the environmental damage that comes with it, while also ensuring that no one goes hungry. Enter: The Felix Project.
In this episode, Ciara sits down with Corporate Partnerships Manager Emma Burns from The Felix Project, an organisation that’s working to solve this issue from both sides: by rescuing delicious, surplus food from farms, restaurants, supermarkets, and cafes, and that delivers raw ingredients and/or cooked meals to over 1,200 organisations, primary schools, and shelters across London.
Growing up in a single-parent household in a South London council estate, Emma reflects on her own connection to food insecurity, the stigma and shame surrounding poverty, reveals the severity of London’s hunger crisis, and highlights how everyone can get involved physically, socially, and financially with supporting the great work of The Felix Project.
