The Keihin PWK Airstriker carb is widely praised and often regarded as one of the best carbs ever made.
Based on the principles of traditional carb design, the performance of the Keihin PWK series stands out in this field. Compared to the Mikuni TMX series, the PWK is often recognized for its superior low-end performance, although some riders believe the TMX delivers better top-end performance. The PWK, when paired with a JD Jetting Kit, has received high praise from many riders. JD Jetting develops performance jet kits for many stock carbs, simplifying parts selection while expanding the adjustable range and enhancing performance within that range. As a result, JD Jetting has earned a strong reputation among users. However, in our view, JD Jetting is simply doing what Keihin or Mikuni should have done themselves. Fundamentally, the working principles of these carbs remain unchanged.
In real-world conversations or on social media platforms, you’ll often hear or see this statement: “There’s no carb better than a precisely tuned PWK!”Among those who make this claim are some seasoned mechanics, including Morgan Spradling, the owner of Highland Cycles, who previously tested our GEN3 Pro series. Initially, there were some issues with the carb, and after a series of challenges, Morgan ultimately gave the GEN3 Pro some positive feedback. The details can be found in the video he uploaded to his channel on June 9, 2023.The GEN3+ is an upgraded version of the GEN3 Pro, and their performance differences are worlds apart. However, we believe that’s not the key point. The key is that many people still hold the belief that a precisely tuned traditional carb is the best option!
If you’ve never used a modern metering rod carb, you might stick to your opinion—and that’s perfectly fine! It’s important to clarify that by “modern metering rod carbs,” we’re referring to the Lectron Billetron Pro series, the SmartCarb SC2 series, and the XTNG GEN3+ series. We can confidently tell you that when it comes to low-end performance, modern metering rod carbs absolutely surpass the PWK series—and there’s no need to even compare them to the TMX series!
There is some debate regarding top-end performance, particularly when it comes to the Lectron Billetron Pro series. The reduced venturi diameter limits top-end airflow, The thicker outer diameter of the copper tubes in the torque gain circuit and the Power Jet circuit, as well as the latest X-Rod, will more or less generate additional air turbulence, which affects top-end performance to some extent. That said, in many cases, the top-end performance of the Billetron Pro is not actually inferior to that of the PWK or TMX. While you might notice some differences, they are far from significant. Moreover, one thing we can say with certainty is that, for carburetors of the same bore size, the top-end performance of the SmartCarb SC2 and XTNG GEN3+ is undeniably better than that of the PWK or TMX. This is primarily because, at high RPMs, the fuel exiting the flat surface of the metering rod is atomized almost to the level of fuel vapor by the shearing force of the high-speed airflow, greatly enhancing combustion efficiency. In this regard, the working principle of traditional carbs falls short when compared to metering rod technology. Additionally, traditional carbs are highly sensitive to environmental changes, requiring constant adjustment for variations in weather and altitude—something modern metering rod carbs handle with ease.
In this video, we focus on low-end performance. As everyone knows, manufacturers love using dyno charts to prove their claims. While dynos can provide clear answers about top-end performance, they rarely give insight into performance below 3,000 RPM. In the world of enduro riding, riders often operate in this low RPM range, especially in challenging forest terrain.
What exactly is low RPM torque performance?
Find a slightly steep forest trail, use first or second gear, and climb slowly. The lower the RPM at which the engine can operate without stalling, the better the torque performance. This extreme low RPM performance is something that cannot be fully measured on a dyno—it’s only through real-world riding experiences that you get the most accurate answers.
The purpose of this video is to respect the facts. We aim to objectively and honestly show the results of our product testing without any deliberate fabrication or misinformation. Of course, we also encourage anyone to conduct similar tests. If you are someone with extensive experience in carb tuning or engine optimization, or if you are a meticulous and serious individual, you are sure to find a real and objective answer!
