On 16 August 1940, Flight Lieutenant James Nicolson’s Hurricane fighter was set ablaze during the Battle of Britain.
Burning alive, lungs filled with smoke, every instinct told him to bail out—until he saw the German fighter that had shot him down.

Through fire and pain, Nicolson fought back. He downed the enemy before parachuting to safety, scarred but alive.
For this incredible act of courage, he was awarded the Victoria Cross—the only Fighter Command pilot in World War II to ever receive it.
