In our 6th experiment, we got dirrrty. A friend showed us how he usually goes dumpster diving – it felt a lot less like "Mission Impossible"-ish than we expected! We found a lot of impeccable produce: lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, milk products, meats and more. Our 6 tips for dumpster diving:

#1: Learn from the best. For your first time, go with someone who’s more experienced than you. I’ts more fun to dive with friends anyways!

#2: A little packing list. Bring gloves, a flashlight, light bags and maybe something to clean your hands after.

#3: Don’t leave a mess. Try to not cut open any bags, cover up any open bags and be silent.

#4: Only take what you need. It can be tempting to take everything you find, but don’t waste food twice.

#5: Know your rights. Before you go dumpster diving, learn the laws in your country. Don’t pick any locks or climb fences.

#6: Stay clean. Once you’re home from dumpster diving, wash all foods thoroughly. And share them with your friends!

If you don't want to do anything illegal or if dumpster diving is too much work for you, try finding a local food sharing organisation. In Zurich there are public fridges, where people can drop off their leftovers and in return take things from the fridge.
