It’s World Malbec Day! Yep, we had no idea either. But it gives us the perfect excuse to do a short guide to Malbec and to try out four very different styles of Malbec.

Malbec originally hails from the beautiful old town of Cahors in south-west France but it’s found its true home in Argentina. Three-quarters of the world’s Malbec comes from Argentina and predominately the Mendoza region.

Younger, cheaper Malbec is usually unoaked, soft and fruity, easily gluggable on a sunny day. A typical Malbec taste profile would be violets, blueberries and plum. More expensive Malbec will be oak aged, adding vanilla creaminess to the flavour. It’s also a great blending grape, usually with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst other things.

In this episode, we taste two inexpensive (£12-13) wines and compare them with two more expensive ones (circa £35). We also compare three Argentinians to one Cahors and contrast three 100% Malbec wines with one blend.
