Tarikh Episode 782
Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons and events of History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about the history of The Nassak Diamond, a 43.38-carat Golconda diamond, which originated from the Kollur Mine in India during the 15th century. Initially a larger 89-carat stone, it was an adornment in the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple in Maharashtra, believed to be a divine eye of Lord Shiva. After the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818, the British East India Company acquired the diamond, selling it to British jewellers Rundell and Bridge, who recut it. The diamond was later owned by the 1st Marquess of Westminster and passed through various hands. In 1940, American jeweller Harry Winston recut it to its current emerald shape. The diamond was auctioned in 1970 to Edward J. Hand and is now held in a private museum in Lebanon, with calls for its return to India.
