Which way is the wind blowing? It’s the direction of the air at the inlet and outlet that makes the difference between axial and centrifugal fans.

AirPro Sales Manager / Senior Application Engineer Chet White outlines the basic difference in this quick whiteboard video.

A common question that comes up is what’s the difference between an axial and centrifugal fan?

So for the sake of this video, we’re going to assume that this whiteboard is a window to show what an axial fan looks like. So if you’ve seen a window fan, it’s like a box. Inside it, you have a fan with blades. This is an axial fan. And so air - let’s say the fan is blowing that way towards the whiteboard - air is coming to the fan, being processed by the blades, and continuing to blow in the same direction that it came into the fan.

A centrifugal fan looks more like this. And let’s say this is the inlet to the fan. So once again, like the axial fan, we have air coming towards the inlet - towards the whiteboard - but in a centrifugal fan, it turns that air 90 degrees, so the plane that it exits the fan is perpendicular to the plane that it came into the fan. So it’s going to blow out that way instead of passing through in the same direction like an axial fan.
