The 2026 International Volunteer Year honours the joy of giving and the people who bring hope, skills, and compassion to communities everywhere. I want to thank all past, present and future volunteers who are working with FAO to help build sustainable agrifood systems for all.

Video Message by Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General:

Dear Colleagues,

Today, we launch the International Year of Volunteers 2026 to honour the spirit, dedication and invaluable impact of the work and contribution of volunteers around the world.

This International Year also marks the 25th anniversary of the first International Year of Volunteers in 2001.

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of FAO — eight decades of collective efforts to achieve food security for all.

The contribution of volunteers in advancing FAO’s mandate over the years has been vital.

Across communities around the world, volunteers assist, in transforming agrifood systems, supporting crisis response, and reaching out to the vulnerable people.

Their efforts - from community-level engagement to global humanitarian responses - accelerate progress towards sustainable development and a world free from hunger and malnutrition.

We recognize and appreciate all volunteers for their tireless work, strong commitment, and enduring passion.

Your energy and determination are assisting to strength FAO’s work towards ensuring the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life - leaving no one behind.

I look forward to a fruitful International Year of Volunteers 2026.
