The wake-up call from the mosque, echoes across the Martapura river glittering in the bright sunlight at the start of a new day. Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan, is crisscrossed by 80 winding Rivers but the Martapura river is considered to be the mother River. Stilt houses dominate the landscape above the river where wooden boats are the most important means of transportation. Because of the watery environment, Banjarmasin is known as the Venice of Asia.
