Are we designing with longevity in mind? This week's guests suggested not enough people are and they challenged the community to ensure homes and buildings are designed to last whilst decarbonising the built environment. We were extremely lucky to have Tab Binding, from Timber Development UK to draw upon her instrumental work to position timber as the first-choice building material for any UK construction project. Tab was joined by Arbor Architects' Matt Hayes who shared his ethos and commitment to designing with longevity by sharing a number of case studies and examples where timber has been an integral material.

Tab Binding is Timber Development UK's highly respected and connected Head of Education and Engagement. She's been in the industry almost 40 years, starting out with coppicing and first and second thinning’s, sawmilling and manufacturing before working on supply-chains for Welsh timber, volumetric offsite construction, strength grading, modification of timber, certification of new products, building performance and post occupancy evaluation, retrofit and housing policy.

Matt Hayes, founder of Arbor Architects sees sustainability as inherent in good design and that it should seamlessly blend into the background of spaces letting the materiality and light do the talking. Prior to forming Arbor Architects, Matt was a Project Architect at Architype. As a certified Passivhaus Designer and Architect he has successfully delivered a number of exemplar Passivhaus projects including the first Passivhaus Plus public building in the UK, Bicester Eco Centre.
