A PLAN TO REVITALISE A FAVOURITE MOUNTAIN BIKE DESTINATION

Lysty has been the home of mountain biking in Melbourne since the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

In that time we’ve seen the popularity of mountain biking increase, no more so than over this past year.

But this popularity hasn’t come without its challenges, especially when it comes to maintenance of the busiest trail network in Australia.

The bulk of this work is organised by a bunch of dedicated volunteers spearheaded by the Lysterfield District Trail Riders with the generous support of Parks Victoria.

Although effective, this approach won’t see the park reach its full potential as a premium riding destination. That’s because many more volunteer hours are needed to complete trail works.

And like you, the volunteers prefer to be out riding, too.

So how can you help?

A number of MTB enthusiasts have come up with a plan to create Lysterfield Cycles, Australia’s first not-for-profit MOUNTAIN bike shop.

It will be located inside the new Montague Orchard development at the Lysterfield Park main entrance and trailhead.

It’s planned any profits raised from the shop will directly fund future trail maintenance.

This will include engaging professional trail builders, helping the Lysterfield District Trail Riders pay for materials and in time support broader community activities such as facility upgrades, gym stations and rider support or sponsorship.

It’s important to note, Lysterfield Cycles doesn’t want to compete with Melbourne bike shops and has no intention to sell bikes.

In fact, with a thriving trail network and an increase in the number of riders, we see local bike shops benefiting in the long term.

Lysterfield Cycles hopes to offer a diverse range of demo and hire bikes, bike servicing, stock a range of Lysty merch as well as a selection of parts and accessories.

We’re now calling on the mountain bike community to help raise the start-up capital needed to set up the shop.
