Michaela DePrince is a living embodiment of Black excellence, breaking barriers in the world of ballet, an art form historically dominated by white performers. Born in war-torn Sierra Leone in 1995 as Mabinty Bangura, her early life was marked by profound hardship. Orphaned at a young age during the country's brutal civil war, she was subjected to discrimination due to her skin condition, vitiligo, and labeled "devil's child." Yet, even amidst the tragedy of her childhood, Michaela found solace in a magazine photograph of a ballerina she discovered in an orphanage. That image became her beacon of hope.
