STORYLINE:
Lebanese bus and taxi drivers staged a strike on Thursday to protest against the rise in petrol prices and what they claim is the government''s neglect of the ground transportation sector.
Lebanese unions and syndicates for land transportation have criticised what they say is the constant stalling by the government in meeting their demands.
In a statement, all public vehicle drivers in Lebanon were urged to stop work and protest peacefully against "increasing taxes and fees through the weekly rise in petrol prices with the aim of serving the budget deficit and the public debt".
Early on Thursday morning in the capital, Beirut, protesters blocked the way of drivers not taking part in the strike and asked their passengers to leave the vehicles.
Mahmoud Al-Sayyed, a striking driver, said they were calling for a peaceful sit-in against the increase in petrol prices and alleged corruption.
Striking drivers gathered in Beirut, Zahle, Sidon, Baalbek, Tripoli, Nabatieh and Bhamdoun to take part in protest marches.
The strike was due to end at noon local time (1000 GMT) when news conferences were to be held in each region.
