This is a full, 3+ hour retrospective on the entire Gamera franchise, covering every film from 1965 to the present and tracing how this flying turtle somehow survived decades of industry shifts, studio collapses, tonal pivots, and changing audience tastes.

We start with Gamera, the Giant Monster and the state of Daiei Studios in the mid-60s, when the company needed a hit and decided to challenge the monster that was already dominating the genre, Godzilla. From there, the series quickly leans into kid-focused storytelling, increasingly wild alien villains, and a tone that defines the Showa era entries for better and worse. I break down what works in those films, what absolutely does not, and why that period still matters to Gamera’s identity.

The retrospective then shifts into the 1990s with Gamera: Guardian of the Universe and the radical creative reset led by director Shusuke Kaneko. This trilogy repositions Gamera as an ancient guardian tied to humanity’s survival, and the tone becomes far more grounded and apocalyptic. I go in depth on Gamera 2: Attack of Legion and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris, focusing on their thematic ambition, miniature work, creature design, and why many fans consider this run the peak of the franchise.

I also spend time on Gamera the Brave, which attempts to reintroduce a softer, child-centered perspective for a new generation. Its reception, box office performance, and long-term impact are all part of the discussion. The video closes with a look at modern revival efforts, including Gamera Rebirth, and whether Gamera still has room to grow in today’s kaiju landscape.
