Following Stonewall Jackson's narrow-margined, hard-fought victory at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, initiative in the Northern Virginia Campaign shifts out of the hands of Union Major General John Pope over to General Robert E. Lee, who will seize the opportunity to launch a major counter-offensive against Pope's Federal Army of Virginia. Linking James Longstreet's Right Wing with Stonewall Jackson's Left Wing, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia is now fully re-united and ready to do battle against the Federals. However, Pope soon learns of Lee's movements and begins a withdraw beyond the north banks of the Rappahannock River. From August 22nd - 25th, 1862, the two armies will stare down one another on opposite banks of the river in what becomes known as the First Battle of Rappahannock Station. After days of probing and feeling out the Federals' positions, Lee, Longstreet, and Jackson devise a daring plan to launch a wide flanking movement around Pope's right flank using Jackson's Left Wing. And so, from August 25th - 27th, Jackson's "foot cavalry" will conduct a series of marches, maneuvers, and skirmishes with Pope's army in a string of engagements known as the Manassas Station Operations.
