With a spiralling cost of living crisis, a property market which has far outrun earnings and 76% of Brits believing our sense of community spirit has disappeared, it would seem that for many people, our models for housing aren’t working.

Is there another way?

Over the last year Mim has explored how alternative approaches to housing could help us live in more connected, affordable, fairer and greener ways.

She visited 14 communities across the UK and Europe that diverge from nuclear family models of living, from urban co-living developments to Britain’s last remaining naturist community, from a 1970s self-sufficient hippy commune to the Bruderhof religious community in Sussex who share roots with the Amish.

Miriam (Mim) Skinner is a writer, journalist and social entrepreneur from County Durham. Her debut non-fiction book ‘Jailbirds’, written about her time working at a women’s prison, was one of Stylist’s ‘most anticipated paperback releases’ of 2020, optioned by BBC Studios for a drama series and won her a place on Elle Magazine’s List of ’50 game changers’.

She’s also the co-founder and director for social enterprise REfUSE which campaigns to eradicate food waste across County Durham. Her writing has featured in The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The I Paper and The Huffington Post.

Her latest book is ‘Living Together: Searching for Community in a Fractured World’ and will be published in November 2022.
