One of the earliest attempts to classify the elements was made by Johann Döbereiner, who proposed the rule of triads. According to this rule, some elements form groups of three with similar properties, and the middle element has an atomic weight that is the average of the other two. For example, lithium (Li), sodium (Na), and potassium (K) form a triad, and the atomic weight of Na is about halfway between Li and K. The rule of triads was a useful tool for predicting the existence and properties of some unknown elements, but it did not apply to all elements and was later replaced by more accurate methods.
