Kay Bass Restoration

Описание к видео Kay Bass Restoration

A short video of an upright bass restoration along with some original MM music.  A trusting friend, Sarah, connected me with this instrument owned by the late Joe Santora (Cabo Frio)
That alone was enough inspiration for me..... Joe was a jazz legend.

Some technical jibber jabber:

When a bass falls,  more commonly the neck breaks. In this case, the neck (maple) must have been loose....the top block (douglas fir?) splintered as the neck dovetail pulled through the top block mortise. The body of the block was still securely attached, but both mortise sides were split.
In lieu of disassembling the body and building a new top block,  I epoxied the breaks and clamped.
Once set, using the actual neck with dovetail wrapped in plastic, I cast a new top block mortise from epoxy. After cure, I removed neck and plastic for a perfect fit. After full cure, the neck was finally attached with hide glue to facilitate future maintenance.
