The world has set a mission to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. In Africa, the priority region for โ€ช@UNESCOโ€ฌ the mission works with its agents and collaborate with government agencies to "leave no one behind". UNESCO has launched a global initiative to reimagine how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet.

The main task of UNESCO Ghana is to aid Ghana towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals via the promotion of lifelong learning. The mission is keen on contributing to the building of a culture of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, science, arts, communication and information. His Excellency Abdourahamane Diallo, the Country Representative of UNESCO to Ghana shed light of the mission and vision of UNESCO in Ghana, to help Ghana develop relevant policies to capacitate relevant resources, which will help Ghana implement the agenda in education, science, communication and information. The mission is also to support the African Union Framework vision by 2063.

Shedding light on the vibrant and rich cooperation between UNESCO and Ghana for approximately 65 years, Mr. Diallo highlights that the promotion of education is the core mandate of UNESCO, in achieving the SDG 4. The role of teachers is critical is achieving the success of SDG 4, which is why UNESCO Ghana together with government is helping to address the issues of lack of teachers in rural area, via the Comprehensive National Teachers policies.

As Accra has been selected as the World Book Capital in 2023, (April 23rd 2023 โ€“ April 24th 2024) this is going to help and promote the reading culture and the book publishing sector in Ghana. This will contribute to the promotion of lifelong learning in Ghana, with the Slogan, AKWAABA- BOOK-A-BOOK, he added.

His Excellency Diallo added that UNESCOโ€™s global mission is Africa and gender, which seeks to connote that UNESCO Ghana will aid in the education of the girl-child in the rural areas in the country. He commended Ghana for Her continuous effort on the promotion of the Girl-Child education which will aid in women empowerment in the future. He added the role model initiative via clinics and workshops where established women in Ghana, will share their stories to motivate girls to aspire to greatness.

UNESCO Ghana seeks to ensure that the promotion and the protection of the rich Ghanaian and African cultural heritage is maintained and promoted via tourism and education. Ghana has potential sites which are tentative sites to be added to the World Heritage Sites List, which needs to worked on to be accepted on the list. This initiative is been worked on by ministerial committees, he added. Mr. Diallo added that less than 10% of the World Heritage Sites list are in Africa, which Africa needs to work on to be able to add more sites on the list.

He finally added that UNESCO Ghana will work with government and its partner agencies to ensure that all sectors (Education, Culture, Sciences, Communication and Information) create policies which help to achieve the SDGs.
