For Akeem Glasgow, joining Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local 1 wasn’t just a career decision—it was a path inspired by family and fueled by dedication. His father, a seasoned foreman with Local 1 for over 20 years, always encouraged Akeem and his brother to pursue a trade, particularly masonry.

Akeem’s journey started at an early age as he attended a trade school in Pennsylvania, where he gained hands-on experience in masonry.
After graduating, he went straight into the workforce, laying block for a construction company. When he moved to New York, his father encouraged him to take the Local 1 entrance exam, a straightforward test in reading comprehension and math. A few months later, he got the call for an interview—and his career with Local 1 officially began.

Now part of the Pre-Job Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman Program, Akeem is thriving. He loves the program, the benefits, and the skilled instruction he receives.

But he emphasizes that success in this trade requires dedication, discipline, and pride in your work. Training starts early—6:00 AM sharp—and there’s no room for slacking off in such a demanding field.

At just 20 years old, Akeem is securing a future in a trade that offers stability, good pay, and lifelong skills.

His advice to anyone considering a career in masonry or construction? “Give it a shot.” Whether it’s Local 1, PCC, or another union trade, the opportunity is there for those willing to work hard and commit to their craft.
