In 1978, the Blackfriars Massacre, also known as the Blackfriars murders, shook Downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It was a brutal, unsolved incident involving the Irish Mob and Italian-American Mafia. On June 28th, four known criminals and former television investigative news anchor Jack Kelly were gunned down in Blackfriars Pub. The motive was rumored to be tied to a cocaine deal gone awry.
The perpetrators stormed the pub after hours, catching the victims off guard. Among the slain were club manager John A. Kelly, found with fatal gunshot wounds in the basement alongside Charles Magarian, Peter Meroth, Freddie Delavega, and the pub's owner Vincent E. Solomonte. The bodies were discovered by a janitor arriving for work the next day.
Police found firearms, cocaine, marijuana, and $15,000 in cash at the scene, ruling out robbery as the primary motive. It appeared to be a targeted execution, reminiscent of classic gangland-style violence. Vincent E. Solomonte's connection to Winter Hill Gang member Stephen Flemmi added intrigue to the investigation.
Despite extensive efforts, the case remains unsolved, leaving a haunting legacy of organized crime in Boston's history.
