Causes: There are 3 possible conditions (as per my knowledge) that leads to the above problem
1. Dehydration
2. Root Rot
3. Consumption of Stored Energy by Plant

Case 1: Dehydration
This can happen when a plant is uprooted and repotted. When we uproot a plant, its fine roots that are attached to caudex dries off or get disturbed. Thus the plant is unable to absorb water readily from the soil leading to caudex getting Soft. A plant that is kept out of soil will face the same issue.

Case 2: Root Rot
Excess water or any physical damage to caudex may trigger root Rot. It gets worse day by day consuming the whole caudex. Heavy soil like clay which has the tendency to hold water can also lead to Rot. An accidental wear and tear on root or caudex during potting can be attacked by fungus leading to Rot. Thus, it is always advisable to apply fungicide on cuts on any part of the plant.

Case 3: Consumption of Stored Energy by Plant
This is a very interesting case where a plant consumes more energy than it is preparing. I have particularly noticed this in saplings (1-2 yrs old). Seed pods consume a lot of energy and its a long process that can take 2-3 months. When the pods are growing, the plant tends to stop growing with no new leaves. Thus, the plant consumes much more energy than it manufactures. This extra energy comes from caudex which starts to shrink gradually. The pictures shown in the post is Case 3.
