Inspite of being one of the most intimate associates of Chaitanya , this man’s name is not even mentioned once in Chaitanya Bhagavat – the first Bengali biography of Shri Chaitanya ! Why did Vrindavan Das Thakur , considered the vyasa of Chaitanya lila and the author of Chaitanya Bhagavat deliberately not write his name ?! At other places he is subtly mentioned as ‘… some fortunate individual’ . It is understandable that subtle efforts were made to obliterate this man from the story of Shri Chaitanya !

But providence would have it otherwise . He thrived and well . We know of his very important position in Gour lila from a thousand other texts and poetries written by other contemporaries and also from the celebrated later day work Chaitanya Charitamrita .

This man was none other than Narahari Sarkar of Shrikhanda village . He is one of the main founding pillars of Gaudiya vaishnava dharma . He was the first to pen down the mantras and organized worship procedure (puja paddhati) of Gouranga . He was one of the firsts to initiate disciples with gour mantra , which makes him one of the main branches of Gaudiya dharma . He was loved by Nityananda , and yet neglected by many other direct associates of Mahaprabhu ! What may be the secret behind this deliberate obliteration ?!!

This is because Narahari and his home village of Shrikhanda harbours one of the most fiercely debated and esoteric aspect of Gaudiya dharma . A philosophy which most gaudiya leaders of his time could not outright reject because of the authority that Narahari sarkar commands as a ‘parshad’ ( associate ) and yet not want to speak about it openly in public , perhaps because of the risk of misinterpretation !

Narahari Sarkar worshipped gauranga in ‘madhura bhava’ – the mood of a lover , in what would eventually gain momentum and rise as a distinct philosophy by itself called – ‘Gour nagari bhava’ . In this philosophy , Gouranga would rise as the ultimate worshippable truth , a self sufficient deity in his own right who becomes the ‘naagar’ , or the lover and the sadhaka his naagari or beloved . The idea ofcourse , is inspired from the practices of worshipping Krishna as the lover of Vraj . But for him , Gauranga and not Krishna , was the highest tattva and the newfound ‘naagar’ ! Gauranga is worshippable , not because he is Krishna incarnate on earth , but because he is by himself the highest truth . In Gaur-naagari upasana , also known as Gour-paaramya-vaada , Gouranga finds expression as the highest attainable truth .

The sevaks of Thakur family still sings in the old ‘boro taal’ kirtan style . It is amazing to note how these near extinct taalaas of original dhrupad kirtan gaan of Bengal are still preserved in this tiny village !
At boro dyanga , a large octagonal temple stands where the naagari is united with her beloved Naagar for eternity , ‘Nitya lila’ quite literally ! The saga of transcendental love continues at Sripat Shrikhanda .
