📌 Wander Diary: As Galungan celebrations filled Bali with colour and ceremony, I wandered up through Penglipuran Village, one of the island’s most famous traditional communities and a must-visit for anyone seeking real Balinese culture. It was mid-morning, the sun warming the stone paths, and the village was alive with the energy of tourists filling the streets, locals preparing offerings, and the beautiful Galungan celebrations in full swing.

Tall penjor lined the street, swaying gently overhead like golden gateways into Bali’s spiritual heart…. As I wandered, I shared the story of how this remarkable village has become a living museum, lovingly preserved by the community… Penglipuran is shaped by the Tri Mandala philosophy… a harmony of sacred space, community life, and the everyday world, and you can feel that balance in every step.

This wander was packed with colour, culture, and the quiet charm that makes Penglipuran one of the top travel destinations in Bali. And of course… the heat won again! The camera overheated near the end, turning this journey into a two-part adventure.

🌾 Fascinating facts about the village and Galungan

Penglipuran is one of the cleanest villages in the world. It’s officially recognised globally for its cleanliness. No litter, no pollution, and no vehicles allowed inside the core village. The locals take huge pride in keeping it spotless.

The village layout follows the ancient Tri Mandala philosophy and is designed in three sacred zones...

Utama Mandala (the spiritual upper zone)
Madya Mandala (the middle for daily life)
Nista Mandala (the lower, more worldly zone)
You literally walk through philosophy as you wander uphill.

Every house faces the same direction. All traditional homes in Penglipuran face Mount Agung, Bali’s most sacred mountain, believed to be the dwelling place of the gods. This alignment is intentional and deeply spiritual.

Galungan celebrates the triumph of good over evil. It marks the return of ancestral spirits to the family compound. Balinese families spend days preparing offerings, decorating penjor, and welcoming these visiting spirits with open hearts.

The penjor you see lining the streets symbolises prosperity. Those tall, curved bamboo poles, decorated with coconut leaves and offerings, represent the bounty of the earth. They’re unique to Galungan and create that iconic, sweeping look over every Balinese road.
