因為一場世紀大場鼠疫，港英政府於1906年成立了香港第一間專為臨床和公共衛生服務而興建的實驗室「細菌學檢驗所」。檢驗所位於太平山高地，可以俯瞰整個太平山區，這個位置也反映著對鼠疫的監察和研究。

1906-1940s: 細菌學檢驗所 (Bacteriological Institute)
1940s-1960: 病理檢驗所 (Pathological Institute)
1960-1996: 舊病理檢驗所 (Old Pathological Institute)
1996-now: 香港醫學博物館 (Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences)
