This might just be one of the most powerful darkroom techniques I know of.

Masking areas of the negative while using different contrast filters (aka split grade printing) when done correctly can give you extreme amounts of local contrast control. This is an advanced darkroom technique that when you grasp the concept will excite you by the incredible posibilities it offers!
