About the Guest:
Prof. Chirantan Chatterjee is a Professor of Development Economics, Innovation, and Global Health at the University of Sussex Business School. He also holds visiting positions at the MIPLC, Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich, Germany, and as a Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. Previously, he served as a Professor and Reader of Economics of Innovation & Global Health at SPRU-Sussex, where he was the PhD Program Convenor, Co-Director of Policy Training & Executive Education, and Deputy-Lead for the 2029 REF at U-Sussex Business School. He is a current Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
Prof. Chatterjee's expertise spans applied economics with a focus on development economics, technological change, pharmaceutical economics, and global health. Over the past decade, he has been a full-time faculty member at leading Indian business schools, including IIM Bangalore, Indian School of Business, and IIM Ahmedabad, where he held the ICICI Bank Chair in Strategic Management and was Chairperson of the Centre for Management of Health Services.
Between 2018 and 2019, he was awarded the Campbell and Edward Teller National Fellowship at Hoover Institution, Stanford University, where he spent a sabbatical year. He earned his Ph.D. and M.Phil. in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University and completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in civil engineering and management from IIT Roorkee and IIM Calcutta. His career also includes experience as a business journalist and analyst with the Economic Times Intelligence Group in Mumbai.
His research has been supported by institutions like the Wellcome Trust, Johns Hopkins University, the World Bank, and Pfizer. Recently, he contributed to evaluating the UN Multi Partner Trust Fund’s response to COVID-19 and its impact on SDGs and assessed non-price innovation policy instruments for biopharmaceutical R&D with the World Health Organization and Oslo Medicines Initiative.
