Night Varminting 35 Jackals and 4 Porcupines in South Africa - WARNING MULTIPLE IMPACT SHOTS!!!

The Black-backed Jackal is endemic to Africa, widely distributed across the Eastern part from Ethiopia down to Tanzania and the Southern part from Namibia to South Africa.

These relatively small extremely cunning canine predators are very adaptable and highly effective hunters with their main diet comprising mostly of scavenging. They even aggressively drive out their larger cousin the side-striped jackal in areas where they coexist.

Because of their shy cunningness, They are often mentioned in the folklore of native African people the Khoikhoi, where it is often paired with the lion, whom it frequently outsmarts or betrays with its superior intelligence. One story explains that the black-backed jackal gained its dark saddle when it offered to carry the Sun on its back.

An alternative account comes from the San people, whose folklore tells that the jackal received the burn on its back as a punishment for its scavenging habits.

According to an ancient Ethiopian folktale, jackals and man first became enemies shortly before the Great Flood, when Noah initially refused to allow jackals into the ark, thinking they were unworthy of being saved, until being commanded by God to do so.

Although they play a very important part in an ecosystem, in livestock-producing areas and game farms they are seen as vermin and can wreak havoc under livestock and wild game. Causing large economic losses to the farmers.

Despite different strenuous control measures over the years, they remain relatively abundant in these areas, their densities are also higher in said areas. Suggesting that most of these methods are ineffective over the long run where numbers bounce back or even increase. Black-backed Jackals are very susceptible to rabies and are responsible for transmitting the disease to domestic stock.

However, even though population control efforts appear largely ineffective varminting offers a temporary reduction in local numbers and a means to keep numbers in control.
