The National Commission of Backward Classes (NCBC) has strongly criticized the Karnataka Government's decision to categorize the entire Muslim community as backward caste for reservation purposes. This move follows the submission of data by the Karnataka Backward Classes Welfare Department, which lists all castes and communities within the Muslim religion as socially and educationally backward classes under Category 2B in the State List of Backward Classes.

Under this categorization, all Muslims in Karnataka are treated as a separate caste, entitling them to reservation benefits in educational institutions, government jobs, and local bodies. However, the NCBC argues that reservation should be based on parameters of social and educational backwardness, not religion, and categorizing the entire Muslim community as backward caste deprives deserving backward classes of their right to reservation.
