The villains of LoK are often one of the most praised parts of the series, and for good reason. Their effect on Korra as a character are immense and unique, and they each play a part in creating the extremely nuanced protagonist that we all know and love. Some more than others, but all of them definitely had a hand in changing Korra and helping her become more open-minded, patient, and understanding.

I love this series so much for deciding to focus on a different villain every single season, rather than build one up over the course of the four, even if it was largely due to thefact that they didn't know if they'd be back for more seasons. Even so, I think this worked in their favor, and the villains that they created are the best in the Avatar world. Such great motivation and understandable ideologies, despite also clearly taking things too far, so that we still root for Korra in the end.
