Is Vedic Meditation a good way to meditate?
Given that Thom has earned his reputation as a supreme teacher of Vedic Meditation, we would expect that his answer will be a resounding yes to the question. But the question itself needs clarifying first, particularly in terms of defining just what meditation is and is not.
In the process of clarifying the question, we also learn what it is that makes Vedic Meditation distinct from other common techniques or practices.

See the thing is, the word meditation is a bit of a misnomer when we apply it to Vedic Meditation.
You know, you could call anything meditation, you know, you can read some philosopher, a meditation upon dogs. You could read somebody else, they say, I practice meditation, swimming in the swimming pool, watching the black line under me, as I take one stroke after another, I'm meditating.
I hear people say they're meditating when they're running or jogging. I hear people say they meditate upon certain things, you know, the nature of the steel cup and you know it's shape. Meditation, meditation, meditation, meditation.
When I look it up in the dictionary, it means a thought process and what I teach, Vedic Meditation, we use the word meditation because we want to give people a hint that they're likely to be closing their eyes, sitting in a chair. And at least that part of it is accurate. You're closing your eyes and sitting in a chair.
That's where the word meditation actually becomes irrelevant, because in this practice we're learning how to transcend. We're learning how to step beyond thought entirely. It's not a meditative process.
That is to say it's not contemplative, we're not contemplating. It's not hypnotic, there's no hypnosis going on. It's not mindfulness, which is how to be a good shepherd to all the sheep thoughts that you're having.
It's not any other form of dealing with thoughts, thinking, thinking about thinking, thinking about not thinking, commanding yourself to do certain things, trying to make moods in your mind, none of those things.
It's a direct process of teaching the mind how, spontaneously, to forget to think. And because it involves a process of learning how to forget to think, properly it should be referred to as transcendence.
Transcendence means stepping beyond. And so we are transcending the thought process entirely by sitting comfortably in a chair and closing our eyes.
That's where the reference to the word meditation is misleading, because actually, though we call it that, it's not a meditative process.
Vedic Meditation is not meditative. Vedic Meditation is transcendence.
Is it a good way? Is it the only way? Yes, to both. It's a good way because it's the only way.
Can you improve your thinking by thinking about thinking? Probably you can.
Can you get all the benefits that are cited for Vedic Meditation by doing something other than
Vedic Meditation? There's no evidence for it. Let's put it that way.
