Hello everyone,

On March 5th, we were very pleased to welcome Michael McTeague as our guest demonstrator. Michael has recently returned from an extended apprenticeship in Japan and brings with him a refined eye for design, deep technical knowledge, and a reputation as an engaging and thoughtful presenter.

Michael McTeague is a Canadian bonsai professional based in Japan with over half a decade of formal traditional bonsai training. Having studied at Fujikawa Kouka-en in Osaka and certified by the Nippon Bonsai Growers Cooperative, he brings clear, practical expertise for spring bonsai work, working with trees from seed to show. His approach focuses on simple, effective techniques for healthy development and long-term refinement.

For this demonstration, Michael worked on a 50-year-old Shimpaku juniper — a remarkable piece of material that made for an inspiring and educational evening. Shimpaku are among the most respected and refined conifers in bonsai, and seeing mature material handled by a skilled professional is a rare opportunity for our club.

Michael is known not only for his talent, but also for his ability to clearly explain design decisions, technique, and long-term development strategy. This demonstration offered valuable insight into conifer design at a high level both for those who are newer to bonsai and those with years of experience!
