Myths of the Law Profession

There are many rumours about the legal profession, some of which are true, most of which are not.

The purpose of this episode is to address the myths about the profession and make evident the true state of affairs.

The following rumours are set straight in this episode:
o Attorneys are rich as hell;
o The TV show “Suits” accurately depicts the legal profession;
o You’ll be a great attorney if you’re good at arguing;
o We have the jury system in SA;
o Judges use gavels;
o You are an attorney once you have obtained your LLB degree;
o Attorneys are always in court;
o Your law degree adequately prepares you for articles;
o Advocates are better than attorneys;
o You can sue people for billions of Rands in damages;
o Attorneys are sharks simply after people’s money;
o Attorneys enjoy assisting family members and friends; and
o There is an oversupply of conveyancers and notaries.
