Authenticity is a word we crave. It's celebrated, sought after, and promised by everyone from politicians to influencers to brands. But the uncomfortable truth is that authenticity itself may be more crafted than genuine. Perhaps authenticity is less about uncovering something deeply "true," and more about aligning your actions to the story you've chosen for yourself.
When we say someone is authentic, we usually mean they seem consistent. Their story matches their actions, their brand reflects their choices, and their words echo their behaviors. But this consistency doesn't necessarily indicate something inherently authentic beneath - it could simply mean they're better at staying committed to their chosen narrative.
Consider the concept of the "professional persona." When an architect carefully curates their personal brand - minimalist black clothing, understated yet iconic glasses, a calm voice, elegant Instagram snapshots of sketches - are they being "authentic"? Or are they skillfully performing a specific version of authenticity that's aligned with cultural expectations of what "serious architects" look like?
Authenticity, then, might be best seen as the strategic performance of sincerity. We shape our behaviors, language, even emotions, to align with the story we want others (and ourselves) to believe. The successful professional who projects confidence even when uncertain, the charismatic leader who projects calm in a crisis - are they being fake, or simply choosing authenticity as a tactic to achieve their goals?
Instead of chasing the illusion of some pure, essential authenticity, perhaps it's more helpful - and more honest - to ask:
What story am I choosing to live by, and why?
What impact am I aiming to create with this persona?
Am I willing to stand behind this chosen narrative, even under scrutiny?

Authenticity is less a hidden truth and more an intentional commitment - a conscious, deliberate alignment between who you say you are and what you do.
In other words: Authenticity might itself be a skillful, strategic choice. And perhaps recognizing this frees us from the burden of performing "true self," allowing us to focus instead on something more meaningful - consistency, integrity, and impact.
