Stimming is often more common in highly intelligent autistic children.Dental associations recommend stopping thumb sucking by age four, but many neurodivergent children continue well beyond that.Stimming behaviors are often misunderstood as regression, when they are actually critical coping mechanisms.Trying to remove a stim too early can lead to more harmful replacements like head banging or nail pulling.Around 30 percent of autistic children continue oral stimming beyond age four.Thumb sucking past age five is common in neurodivergent kids and does not mean something is wrong.Some stims offer sensory grounding or help regulate the body when the world becomes too much.
