Описание к видео California's Underwater Forests VANISHED in 10 Years. What Brought Them Back Shocked Scientists

They Nearly Hunted This Animal to Extinction - Now It's Saving California's Ocean

In just ten years, 96% of California's underwater kelp forests vanished across 350 kilometers of coastline, replaced by barren wastelands of purple sea urchins. Sea star disease wiped out 90% of the ocean's natural predators, then a massive warm water blob finished the job. Scientists tried manual urchin removal and lab-grown kelp, nothing worked. Until they brought back an animal nearly extinct from the fur trade: the sea otter.

For 30 million years, California's bull kelp forests supported over 800 species, growing up to 60cm per day. But when fur traders hunted sea otters from 20,000 animals down to just 50 survivors by 1911, they severed a critical ecological link. Otters eat up to 25 pounds of sea urchins daily, without them, urchins exploded and devoured entire kelp forests.

This documentary reveals how the Monterey Bay Aquarium's otter rehabilitation program, using surrogate mothers and anti-imprinting techniques, has restored populations to 3,000+ animals. At Elkhorn Slough, 37 released otters grew the population fivefold and slowed coastal erosion by 69%. Seagrass returned despite pollution. The trophic cascade was restored.

But challenges remain: great white sharks block range expansion, 70% of otters carry Toxoplasma parasites, and fishermen fear economic impacts. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is now studying reintroduction to Northern California and San Francisco Bay, areas that lost their kelp forests and could support thousands of otters.

From near-extinction to ecosystem engineers, sea otters prove that restoring keystone species can resurrect entire ocean environments, if we give nature the right tools.
