Hackaday's [Matt Berggren] sat down with [Ivan Godard] of Out-of-the-Box Computing to talk about the new CPU architecture the company has been developing called the Mill CPU.

Although [Ivan] has recorded videos of lectures given on the topic, we wanted to have a conversation aimed at the average engineer. What resulted is a discussion about the Mill CPU which can be understood by most, rather than just the few who have actually been involved in semiconductor design. The fun part is that Ivan details the business side of things as well as the technical.

This installment is Part 1 of 4. The discussion starts out exploring how the idea for the architecture came about. It's a general purpose design that seeks to capitalize on the efficiency of other chips designed for a specific purpose (like a DSP). The conversation also delves into possible uses and markets when the Mill CPU finally makes its appearance as actual Silicon.
