What is the immune system? How does the immune system work?

In Episode 1 of our short animation series, we give an introduction to the immune system. This animation highlights the differences between our innate and acquired immune systems, and describes how these two branches of the immune system work to fight off invading pathogens and protect us from disease.

The immune system is a complex network of organs, tissues, cells and proteins that work together to protect us from diseases caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Our immune system can be broadly divided into two parts. Innate immunity is something that we are all born with and gives us a fast-acting, ever-ready set of defences. Acquired immunity (also known as adaptive immunity), is a learned form of immunity that takes time to develop but provides a powerful, targeted response against specific pathogens.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of better understanding our immune system, and how it works alone, and alongside medicine, to keep the world safe from infectious diseases.
